Yaks, the long-haired bovids found in the high-altitude regions of Central Asia, play a pivotal role in the lives of people residing in these remote areas. These sturdy animals are celebrated for their adaptability to harsh conditions and versatile usefulness. One of the most important contributions of yaks is their nutrient-rich milk, which constitutes a major part of the local diet. Yaks are generally more sensitive and nervous than cows, which means the milking process requires plenty of patience and skill. During our tour, we persuaded the guide to help us locate a yak for milking, which meant waking up at the crack of dawn. The whole process turned out to be quite challenging.
